February 2008 Luncheon Meeting

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Carolinas Unit of NC enjoyed another very well-attended luncheon meeting Saturday, February 2, at Gary’s Barbecue in China Grove. We had 48 attendees including new members Jim and Pat Waters debuting and grandchildren of Nat and Jack Bingaman, John and Amber [see luncheon pictures by clicking here or by clicking on the Menu choice for Pictures]. Rick Rorie presented numerous flag options for Carolinas Unit of NC and the members provided constructive feedback on the choices. I welcomed Charlie Fishel’s excellent suggestion of commissioning a blue ribbon committee to study the flags issue. Linda Fishel, Duane Carter, Rick Rorie, and Betsy Spoerer volunteered to work together on the Unit flag options. I asked them to work together on this and return Unit Flag recommendations to the membership at our next meeting on March 1 at Fat Boys in Mooresville. Thanks to Rick for volunteering the time, creativity, and effort for this exciting iniative for our Club.

Gary and Diane did a fantastic job catering our club’s luncheon in the club meeting room. Many of you attended last year’s luncheon meeting in the restaurant and let me know we wanted a better meeting space but the food was fine. Gary took care of your request for this year’s meeting with well-arranged space for the buffet and dining tables, piping hot food, and beverage service to our tables. I hope you found this year’s arrangement exceeded your expectations or will let me or Bob Clark or Linda Fishel know otherwise. We try not to read your minds although we really want to know what you want and how you feel about what we do for the club. So let us know. Write us an email, or pick up the phone and call any of us. We work for you.

See You Down The Road,

Jim

January 2008 Luncheon

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Carolinas Unit of North Carolina on January 5 held our first 2008 luncheon at Golden Corral Buffet & Grill at Hanes Mall in Winston Salem, NC. The Club had a great turnout with 44 members and two guests. We also were sad two of our members were hospitalized or recovering from hospitalization and so could not attend. One member mentioned they had heard Charlie had been “fixed” at his hospital, and another suggested the hospital was a Vets Hospital — we’re not sure what to make of this until we hear first-hand from Charlie. We wish both our absent members a speedy and complete recovery.

The Club’s First Vice-President, Bob Clark, announced updates on the rally schedule for 2008. He opened the registration process for the November rally at Ocean Lakes Family Campground with a poster-sized layout of section HH and reservation sheets for the thirty spaces. The Club’s thirty spaces will sell out fast so you should call or email soon to get your name on the list for this popular rally site. Our deadline for reservations for the November campground is May 2008. If we have enough response Bob will request additional sites from Ocean Lakes. If you weren’t at January’s luncheon and want to attend the November rally at Ocean Lakes at Myrtle Beach please email Bob at your earliest convenience. His contact information is at the bottom of this page and is on this website on the OFFICERS PAGE under MENU.

The Club gratefully accepted Rick Rorie’s offer to provide a design for a flag for our Unit. Rick is a graphic artist and expressed interest in doing this service for our Club. The Club has had logo designs for decals (can anyone remember a decal for our unit in the early sixties? Deb and Jim saw one on the back window of a 1959 Bubble in Kannapolis several years ago) and for vest and jacket patches. Also, Martha Kerns has used a nice logo design on the membership handbooks. We are looking forward to Rick’s design for a Unit flag and hope for the debut at Gary’s BBQ on February 2.

A few other members already are on their way or have arrived in Florida, and we understand perfectly well. Some of us would have liked to have been in Florida a week or two earlier than now if we could avoid the recent cold snap in NC and then the snow. However, we are glad to have seen so many members at the January luncheon, and hope we will see you February 2 in China Grove at Gary’s BBQ.
