Web Site Updates

May 9th, 2008

Today I added links to the Unit’s two most recent rallies, Region 3 and Yost Farm.  I added recommended content, under the Menu for About Us, including the Code of Ethics, Caravanners Safety Practices, Cooperation, and Creed.  And I updated the Events Schedule to reflect only the upcoming events.

Please feel free to let us know how you feel about these changes or any other aspect of your Club’s web site?  You can email me at carolinasnc@gmail.com

Proposed Motorhome Amendment

April 15th, 2008

South Florida Unit recently proposed an amendment to the WBCCI Constitution [membership requirements section] for further consideration by the International Club.

Article VI, Sec. 2, Part D, if approved, would read as follows:

“Regular members, who own a motorhome manufactured by Airstream and who were in good standing as of the date of this amendment, may purchase a Class A Motorhome manufactured by the Four Winds International Division of Thor Industries, Inc., and retain their membership in WBCCI.”

If the membership numbers in WBCCI do not meet the finanicial obligations, what happens? Worst case, we could all join a Thor Travel Club with Dutchmen, Aero, Four Winds and others. I was researching an attractive Avion fifth-wheel we saw in the campground today. You remember their silver ones, I’ll bet. Later on Fleetwood bought Avion and started labelling them, “Avion by Fleetwood”. Avion Travelcade Club membership diminished over time. What happened next? The Avion Travelcade Club became . . . Fleetwood Travelcade Club, open to owners of any Fleetwood product “including Avion”. Search on [avionclub] for the sad description in the search result, or here’s the link to the Avion Travelcade Club: http://www.avionclub.org/

The goal is to increase WBCCI’s financial viability. The simplest way apparently is increase membership as it generates revenue to support staff, publications, and other operations costs. Any actions which reduce membership will reduce revenue and cutting expenses could further reduce appeal of the club to members and prospective members. Airstream Co stopped manufacturing Airstream motorhomes. Unless Airstream/Thor can create another Airstream motorhome, this will reduce membership. WBCCI members are proposing best guess ideas to save the club. The solution, short of resuming branding of Airstream motorhomes, seems to involve alienation of existing WBCCI motorhome members or to alienate some percentage of WBCCI trailer members. If the Club doesn’t support existing motorhome owners who are WBCCI members, then those members and perhaps all WBCCI motorhome members may become sufficiently offended to leave the club. If the Club agrees to allow another brand motorhome into membership in WBCCI, then a percentage of the Airstream trailer owners in WBCCI will become sufficiently offended to leave the club. Further, if the Club agrees to allow another brand into membership in WBCCI then how will the Club prevent the Paradise Park effect, where an exclusively Airstream membership was undermined through legal maneuvering? Is there no middle ground, which will less offend both groups and preserve the single-brand integrity of the Club?

No one can unequivocally state they have THE solution. We each have to try to think what is best for our Club and act accordingly. What can you do? Recruit new members now. Approach owners of any un-numbered Airstream with a friendly smile, talk with them and introduce them to the friendliest WBCCI members they could ever meet. Oh yes, and invite them to join your unit or any unit, just join and enjoy all the fun we have with our Club. More members is A solution.

Let your Unit President know TODAY, if you have not already, whether you support or reject this proposed amendment to the WBCCI Constitution.

March 1 Luncheon Meeting

March 1st, 2008

The March 1, 2008 Noon Luncheon at Fat Boys Restaurant in Mooresville was a great success! Our Club’s attendance was 54 including one guest and three new members. This appears to be our largest turn-out in recent history for a luncheon meeting. We were sorry to have missed so many people, but are thankful for the familiar and the new faces we shared lunch and talk with.

Bob Clark encouraged all members interested in upcoming rallies to start now arranging their reservations for the respective rallies. The exception is to wait until May 1st for Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park as they are not open until then. If you want to join Carolinas Unit of NC for our Ocean Lakes Myrtle Beach rally in November please email Bob Clark as soon as possible to obtain one of the few remaining spots for this great rally location. The rates are only $31/night and Bob has the reservation sheets for our Club’s allotted spaces for the Ocean Lakes rally.

Rick Rorie presented a final draft of the flag design for the club’s vote, and the flag was unanimously approved for submission by Jim Cocke to Region 3 Leadership. Our Club will not plan to write or consider any orders until approval from WBCCI International Board. Ray Moser posed an excellent question on the purpose of the flag — this flag will, upon approval by WBCCI, become an optional flag for any member of Carolinas Unit to fly. Members of WBCCI should attend to the Flag requirements and etiquette presented in the WBCCI Blue Book (available on line and from your officers). Past officers could elect to fly their Past Officer flag or, like any member, could fly the Unit flag instead of a Past Officer flag.

Sad News on February 26

February 26th, 2008

We learned today of three losses to our Airstream club’s families.  Bennie Cross passed Saturday 2/24.  Steve Gantt’s daughter, Elizabeth, passed Monday 2/25.  Sandy Carriker’s mother passed Tuesday 2/26.  Please keep our members and their families in your prayers.

February 2008 Luncheon Meeting

February 8th, 2008

Carolinas Unit of NC enjoyed another very well-attended luncheon meeting Saturday, February 2, at Gary’s Barbecue in China Grove. We had 48 attendees including new members Jim and Pat Waters debuting and grandchildren of Nat and Jack Bingaman, John and Amber [see luncheon pictures by clicking here or by clicking on the Menu choice for Pictures]. Rick Rorie presented numerous flag options for Carolinas Unit of NC and the members provided constructive feedback on the choices. I welcomed Charlie Fishel’s excellent suggestion of commissioning a blue ribbon committee to study the flags issue. Linda Fishel, Duane Carter, Rick Rorie, and Betsy Spoerer volunteered to work together on the Unit flag options. I asked them to work together on this and return Unit Flag recommendations to the membership at our next meeting on March 1 at Fat Boys in Mooresville. Thanks to Rick for volunteering the time, creativity, and effort for this exciting iniative for our Club.

Gary and Diane did a fantastic job catering our club’s luncheon in the club meeting room. Many of you attended last year’s luncheon meeting in the restaurant and let me know we wanted a better meeting space but the food was fine. Gary took care of your request for this year’s meeting with well-arranged space for the buffet and dining tables, piping hot food, and beverage service to our tables. I hope you found this year’s arrangement exceeded your expectations or will let me or Bob Clark or Linda Fishel know otherwise. We try not to read your minds although we really want to know what you want and how you feel about what we do for the club. So let us know. Write us an email, or pick up the phone and call any of us. We work for you.

See You Down The Road,

Jim

January 2008 Luncheon

January 10th, 2008

Carolinas Unit of North Carolina on January 5 held our first 2008 luncheon at Golden Corral Buffet & Grill at Hanes Mall in Winston Salem, NC. The Club had a great turnout with 44 members and two guests. We also were sad two of our members were hospitalized or recovering from hospitalization and so could not attend. One member mentioned they had heard Charlie had been “fixed” at his hospital, and another suggested the hospital was a Vets Hospital — we’re not sure what to make of this until we hear first-hand from Charlie. We wish both our absent members a speedy and complete recovery.

The Club’s First Vice-President, Bob Clark, announced updates on the rally schedule for 2008. He opened the registration process for the November rally at Ocean Lakes Family Campground with a poster-sized layout of section HH and reservation sheets for the thirty spaces. The Club’s thirty spaces will sell out fast so you should call or email soon to get your name on the list for this popular rally site. Our deadline for reservations for the November campground is May 2008. If we have enough response Bob will request additional sites from Ocean Lakes. If you weren’t at January’s luncheon and want to attend the November rally at Ocean Lakes at Myrtle Beach please email Bob at your earliest convenience. His contact information is at the bottom of this page and is on this website on the OFFICERS PAGE under MENU.

The Club gratefully accepted Rick Rorie’s offer to provide a design for a flag for our Unit. Rick is a graphic artist and expressed interest in doing this service for our Club. The Club has had logo designs for decals (can anyone remember a decal for our unit in the early sixties? Deb and Jim saw one on the back window of a 1959 Bubble in Kannapolis several years ago) and for vest and jacket patches. Also, Martha Kerns has used a nice logo design on the membership handbooks. We are looking forward to Rick’s design for a Unit flag and hope for the debut at Gary’s BBQ on February 2.

A few other members already are on their way or have arrived in Florida, and we understand perfectly well. Some of us would have liked to have been in Florida a week or two earlier than now if we could avoid the recent cold snap in NC and then the snow. However, we are glad to have seen so many members at the January luncheon, and hope we will see you February 2 in China Grove at Gary’s BBQ.

2008 RALLY SITE HOSTS

January 2nd, 2008

Please review the 2008 Rally Schedule and see if you are familiar with any of the sites and the surrounding area.

If you are familiar, please consider being the rally host for that particular rally. The rally host would create the agenda (meals away from the rally site, nearby places of interest, any other group activities on or off site) for that particular rally. I would help the host coordinate the agenda with the meals prepared by our wonderful cooks at the rally.

Please contact me if you would consider tackling this important task!

Annual Installation of New Officers

December 1st, 2007

The club held the installation of the newly elected officers of Carolinas Unit of North Carolina today, Saturday, December 1, in Charlotte NC. Harold Kerns, Region 3 Past President, installed the new officers at Dilworth United Methodist Church’s new fellowship hall after a catered luncheon for fifty-one members. Everyone enjoyed seeing the beautiful new fellowship hall, had an excellent meal, and the Ballantyne Brass Quintet provided entertainment after the meal before the ceremonies.

The following are the new officers: Jim Cocke, President; Bob Clark, 1st VP; Linda Fishel, 2nd VP; Debbie Cocke, Treasurer; Lynda Brown, Correspondence Secretary; Janice Caskey, Recording Secretary; Ann Hall, Director; Ray Moser, Director; Joe Caskey, Director; Chuck Fishel, Director.

The retiring President Sandy Dowler announced the successful compilation of the club’s first Merit Award application with over 5,000 points amassed, more than 1,000 above the required points for the Merit Award. Sandy worked hard throughout the year to place Carolinas Unit on firm footing to be able to maintain this award eligibility for the upcoming years. Sandy encouraged members to continue attending the Region 3 rallies, IBT meetings, and International Rallies. Volunteering, participating in activities, and attending workshops all contribute both to the members’ enjoyment and to the success of the events. WBCCI recognizes the value of this participation with points toward the Merit Award.

First Vice-President Bob Clark announced the luncheon and rally locations for 2008. Bob remarked the locations reflect the input from membership at the 2007 Winter luncheons and encouraged all members to attend every function.

Jim Cocke, President for 2008, opened his remarks by recognizing and thanking every Past President of our club for their leadership and provision for the club’s future. He asked every past officer and current member to help in the direction of our club. He said his role as President is not one to which he had aspired but was glad he was asked to take. Jim promised to do his best to listen to the membership and told the members they have to provide the input. He emphasized the strong leadership, fellowship, and camping values represented in the club’s membership. The luncheon ended after Jim’s remarks.

The next club event will be the January luncheon meeting at Golden Corral - Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, NC.
